A chance to speak
A chance to shout
A chance to be recognized, considered, telling you what it's all about.
Not your conclusions
Not your stereotypes
Not bowing down
dimming our lights
Not solely freaks in your bedroom
and nuns by your daylight
No bowing down gracefully
Not when disrespected
No 'Well why would you be out that late?!' "You wore WHAT?"
cause Tom or Tyrone feared rejection
We won't stay down while you uplift Becky
We're there on these front lines after Officer John shot your boy Eddie
R E S P E C T
as we gave birth to a nation.
we were all we had back on that plantation
lest you forget brother we're fighting the same fight
racism, bigotry, misogyny, hatred all in the same life.
with every obstacle we have overcame and will come
the Black woman will not stop until our war is won.
Maybe now you will understand
how difficult it is to be a Black woman in this land
others and our own will put us down
but still we rise
raise our fist in triumph
tear bigotry down
we are light filled and it may be too much for you
the Black woman demands justice
and we're through asking you.
